About this role
The Diesel Mechanic / Heavy Equipment Technician role performs repairs and preventative maintenance on heavy equipment, light service equipment, and light trucks. The technician diagnoses mechanical issues, performs overhauls on gas or diesel engines, and completes daily reporting and repair documentation for fleet management.
Key Responsibilities
- Diagnose and repair mechanical problems on heavy equipment
- Perform preventative maintenance and overhauls on gas or diesel engines
- Interpret equipment condition reports and repair orders
- Complete paperwork including parts usage and work order/time card time accounting
- Submit daily consumables reports for hours, fuel, and oil usage
Technical Overview
The role covers diagnostics and repairs across air brakes, hydraulics, electrical systems, HVAC, emission systems (including Tier 4 emission systems knowledge), and drivetrain components. It includes analyzing oil sampling and using on-board computer/fleet management data, while maintaining accurate work order and consumables reports in Dossier and Republic Services Fleet Management Software.
Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate is a heavy equipment technician with at least 1 year of experience repairing diesel and gasoline equipment and performing preventative maintenance. They have ASE-aligned strengths across air brakes, hydraulics, electrical diagnostics, and emission systems, and can follow OSHA Haz Com, OSHA Lock Out Tag Out, and OSHA Fire Protection requirements while completing accurate repair documentation.
