About this role
This remote Inpatient Coding Specialist role is responsible for accurately and timely coding of inpatient medical records in accordance with coding guidelines, CMS regulations, and hospital policies. The position uses tools like 3M encoder and Epic software and supports CDI (Clinical Documentation Integrity) workflows through facility query and CDI reconciliation processes.
Key Responsibilities
- Review medical records and assign ICD-10-CM and/or ICD-10-PCS codes
- Code using MS-DRGs/APR DRGs and POA/SOI/ROM assignment
- Enter coded data into 3M encoder/Epic software accurately
- Follow facility query policy and CDI reconciliation process
- Maintain productivity/quality and comply with AHIMA ethical coding and PHI requirements
Technical Overview
The technical coding scope includes ICD-10-CM and ICD-10-PCS assignment plus grouping and clinical coding components such as CCs, MCCs, HCCs, HACs, PSI’s, and POA/SOI/ROM. Coding is performed in 3M encoder and Epic, with adherence to ethical coding standards (AHIMA) and strict PHI handling.
Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate has at least an Associate’s Degree in HIM and strong inpatient coding proficiency with ICD-10-CM and ICD-10-PCS. They can code accurately within productivity and quality targets, understand coding indicators like CCs/MCCs/HCCs and measures like POA/SOI/ROM, and work confidently in 3M encoder and Epic while protecting PHI and following AHIMA ethical coding standards.
