Nurse Extern I (NE I) is a developmental float pool role for nursing students seeking broad clinical exposure in an acute care setting on a rotating, per diem basis. The extern assists the Registered Nurse by participating in patient care activities such as observation, basic patient care, and reporting relevant information to the RN.

  • assist the Registered Nurse and care team with patient care activities
  • perform observation and basic patient care tasks
  • report relevant information to the RN in accordance with policy
  • participate in guided training and development program aligned to Board of Nursing scope outlines

This is an acute care nursing support externship emphasizing observation, basic patient care, and structured reporting aligned to hospital policy and nursing scope of practice. Eligibility is based on RN nursing program enrollment, completion of Fundamentals of Nursing and initial clinical rotations, and having AHA BLS.

The ideal candidate is an RN nursing student who has completed the Fundamentals of Nursing course and the first round of clinical rotations, and holds AHA BLS. They should be comfortable rotating across multiple units in a developmental float pool role while assisting the Registered Nurse with observation, basic patient care, and reporting relevant information to the RN.
